in pursuit of elephant free zoos
Elephants are wide-ranging, highly intelligent, family-oriented animals who cannot be provided with appropriate amounts
of space or proper social environments in zoos and most other captive situations. Increasingly throughout the world, their
confinement and exhibition is being challenged.
Seven Canadian zoos currently keep elephants. Most are housed in grossly undersized paddocks and highly artificial
conditions. As well, Canada's climate is generally unsuited for elephants requiring individuals in some zoos to spend long
periods of time indoors during winter months.
Zoocheck is highlighting the plight of elephants at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, Canada's most northerly elephant exhibit,
and is urging the zoo to relocate its two elephants to a more appropriate, naturalistic sanctuary environment in an
elephant-friendly climate.
