transforming ontario's zoo industry
Ontario has no rules or regulations controlling zoos and wildlife displays. This has resulted in a proliferation
of captive wildlife facilities across the province, including a substantial number of badly designed, under-funded,
primarily amateur, roadside zoos.
Zoocheck has been working to convince the Ontario government to establish laws that would force all zoos and
wildlife displays to operate at an acceptable, professional standard. While acknowledging that the problem exists, the
government
has not yet delivered a comprehensive zoo licensing regime.
Over the years, Zoocheck has managed to facilitate the closure of some of Ontario's worst zoos and has forced
improvements in others, but the situation is still grim. Through an ongoing series of investigations, public awareness
initiatives and advocacy, Zoocheck continues to push for a zoo regulatory program that would clean up or close down
Ontario's roadside zoos.
