Wild Hearts
A mini-documentary about the wild horses of Alberta.
There are less than 1,700 wild horses remaining in the foothills of Alberta. Despite these small numbers, the ranching community, supported by the Alberta government, has engaged in years of management actions that have led to their drastic reduction and could possibly take them to extinction. There are no protections in place to save wild horses from government sanctioned controls, including culling.
Anti-wild horse proponents say the horses are foreign, invasive (feral) animals that are damaging the environment. In fact, horses emerged in North America before spreading to other parts of the world and they co-evolved with the natural systems that still exist in Canada, so they should be viewed as returned native wild animals that serve an important ecological role in the landscapes they inhabit. As well, horses have served humanity for centuries and deserve to live wild and free in Canada.

Help Keep The Spy Beluga Whale in the Ocean
For the past two weeks, a beluga that has come to be known as Spy Whale, has thrilled locals along the Arctic coast of Norway.
The white whale, who was wearing a harness equipped with two Go Pro mounts, turned up around fishing vessels in late April and has stayed in the waters of Hammerfest. Hundreds of people from the small north Norwegian town watch the whale which has become a local, and international celebrity.
The harness was successfully removed from the SPY whale by representatives of the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries, together with local fishermen. No one has come forward to say they are responsible for the harness wearing whale, but it's clear that he was in previously in captivity.
The whale has become known as the SPY whale as many believe he escaped from a Russian military facility but, so far, no one has come forward to confirm that.
Throughout the world, attitudes about the keeping of whales in captivity are changing. No longer is it just accepted that whales should be in captivity. But, already, advisors to the fisheries officials in Norway are suggesting that SPY whale should be sent to a captive facility (meaning aquarium). SPY whale deserves better.
Norwegian authorities should be reaching out the whale rescue, rehabilitation and retirement experts to explore alternative options for SPY whale. A sea pen in natural ocean water is better than a tank. SPY whale does not appear to be catching the live fish he needs and is currently being provisioned so there's no rush to move him.
If you agree that an alternative to the standard model of captivity should be found for SPY whale, watch the video and send a respectful message to the email at the end (Norwegian Fisheries Ministry: postmottak@nfd.dep.no ).
Let's keep SPY whale in the ocean. -
